For many years, high uric acid was almost entirely blamed on eating too much meat or other protein-rich foods. As a result, many people begin avoiding nutritious foods such as pulses, legumes, dairy products and even healthy plant proteins, believing that dietary protein alone is responsible for the problem. However, Pema approaches this problem from an entirely different perspective.
Yes, diet does influence uric acid levels. Certain foods can contribute to elevated uric acid. But food is only one part of a much larger picture.
Understanding Uric Acid - When does it get elevated?
Contrary to popular belief, uric acid is not always harmful. At normal concentrations, it serves as one of the body's important antioxidants, helping neutralize harmful free radicals circulating in the bloodstream, playing a protective role under normal physiological conditions. Before understanding why uric acid levels become high, it's important to understand how uric acid is handled in the body.
Our body maintains a delicate balance between uric acid production and elimination. Every day, billions of cells complete their life cycle and are replaced by new ones. As these old cells are broken down, their DNA, RNA and energy molecules release purines. The liver then converts these purines into uric acid, which is normally removed by the kidneys and intestines. This process takes place continuously throughout life, regardless of whether a person eats meat or follows a vegetarian diet.
Dietary purines certainly contribute to the total uric acid pool, especially those found in organ meats, certain seafood and alcoholic beverages. Interestingly, studies suggest that nearly 90% of people with hyperuricemia have reduced uric acid excretion rather than excessive uric acid production. Most people associate insulin only with blood sugar control. However, insulin also plays an important role in regulating how the kidneys handle uric acid. Under normal circumstances, the kidneys continuously filter uric acid from the blood and excrete most of it through urine. When insulin levels remain chronically elevated, a condition known as hyperinsulinemia, commonly seen in insulin resistance, the kidneys begin to reabsorb more uric acid back into the bloodstream instead of eliminating it.
