Frequently asked questions

Medical Programs

Most systems treat symptoms. Pema's medical model is built to reverse root imbalances. This isn't surface-level it's a complete physiological and emotional rewire, guided by top naturopaths.

Yes. From PCOS to fatty liver to thyroid disorders we don't manage symptoms, we correct root causes. The longer the issue, the more powerful the shift.

Yes. Before you check out, your care team walks you through a personalized home protocol covering diet, movement, sleep rhythm, and any specific practices from your program. You'll also receive a written take-home guide summarizing your routine, and Pema at Home program schedules follow-up consultations at regular intervals to check on your progress and help you with sustained wellness and habit building as life at home settles back in.

You can, but we don't recommend it. Medical programs involve therapies, rest, and rhythm. True results come from presence.

You can explore Pema lite a 3-day wellness reset with no diagnostics or consultations. It's designed for those who want to transition into a long-term wellness journey in a supportive environment.

Then a Wellness journey might be more aligned. These programs are designed to help your system reset even when there's no diagnosed condition from energy dips to sleep disruption to stress. Explore what your body needs most.

Wellness Journey

Then you're in the right place. Most imbalances don't show up on tests. If you feel like your energy or clarity has dropped it's time to reset.

Couples can join programs together, and families are welcome with dedicated caregiver support for kids under 18. We offer thoughtfully adapted programs for children and teens, from creative and nature-based activities to gentle wellness resets. Toddlers and younger children are also cared for with customised meals and supervised spaces. Many guests return with loved ones after experiencing the shift themselves.

You won't. Our team does a full diagnostic before anything begins. If another path suits you better, we'll switch it without stress.

You can begin with Pema lite, a 3-day reset that introduces you to our approach without requiring a full commitment.

No beliefs required. At Pema, our programs are grounded in naturopathy and clinical science. Food, rest, breath, and movement are structured to restore balance, with yoga and meditation offered as practical tools for resilience, not as rituals you must follow.

We recommend exploring our Medical Programs instead — especially if you're dealing with hormonal, metabolic, or chronic conditions. These are designed with diagnostics, physician-led protocols, and targeted therapies. Learn more about them on our Medical Programs page.

Every programme at Pema is hyper-personalised. We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. From the moment you arrive, a dedicated Circle of Experts including naturopathic doctors, acupuncturists, physiotherapists, yoga experts, culinary nutritionists, ozone specialists, and healers comes together to design a programme uniquely tailored to your health profile, goals, and daily experience.

You begin with a medical form before your arrival, which helps our team understand your unique health profile. Our team will then guide you in selecting the most appropriate programme and room package. A thorough Physiology and Pathology diagnostic assessment is conducted upon arrival, followed by an in-depth orientation with your doctor and healing team.

A typical day begins with a mud walk, Reflexology track walking, Yogic kriyas followed by morning yoga, followed by your personalised Naturopathy therapy schedule, three naturopathic meals, acupuncture and physiotherapy sessions, ozone therapy sessions, guided group wellness activities like Yoga and Zumba, and restful evening practices. Your daily schedule is customised and reoptimised based on your progress and daily experience.

Guests are encouraged to plan their stay outside their menstrual cycle where possible, as certain naturopathic therapies cannot be performed during menstruation. Please inform our team of your cycle dates during the pre-arrival consultation so we can optimise your programme scheduling accordingly.

Outside food and beverages are not permitted at Pema. Our naturopathic cuisine is a core and integral part of your healing programme. Allowing outside food would compromise the therapeutic process and the results you are here to achieve.

Our Approach

We don't treat symptoms, we treat systems. Our method blends diagnostics, movement, stillness, and nutrition to reset your root imbalances.

Because that's how long it takes for the body to settle, release, and begin to rebuild. Anything shorter usually doesn't unlock deeper shifts.

We now offer Pema lite a 3-day wellness reset that lets you experience our methods in a lighter, more flexible format.

Not unless your doctor recommends it. Our protocols are personalized; we meet you where you are and build from there.

No, multiple wellness programs cannot be combined during one stay, although all packages are hyper-personalised and can deal with multiple health ailments simultaneously.

Naturopathy & Hydrotherapy

Naturopathy is a time-honoured system of healing that works with the body's own intelligence rather than against it, using nature, nutrition, and therapeutic touch to restore balance. At Pema, naturopathy is not a single treatment but the foundation of every guest's journey, assessed and guided by our naturopathic doctors and woven together with therapeutic nutrition, oriental therapies, and modern diagnostics for a truly integrative approach to healing.

Naturopathy isn't one treatment on a list at Pema; it is the foundation on which everything else is built. Our naturopathic doctors look at you as a whole person, across all five layers of your being, rather than chasing symptoms one by one. From there, they build a plan based on modern diagnostics, therapeutic nutrition, and mind-body therapies.

We believe real healing happens across the five koshas (layers) of being. Instead of treating just the symptoms, our naturopaths get to the root cause and guide your body back to its natural rhythm. We believe that when provided with the right support, the body has its own healing abilities.

Yes, Naturopathy is a safe practice. At Pema, naturopathy works right alongside modern diagnostics and medication. Every therapy is prescribed and supervised by our naturopaths.

Hydrotherapy uses water in different forms for its therapeutic effects. At Pema, hydrotherapy is a clinically guided practice that uses water's temperature and pressure effects on the body to ease inflammation, boost circulation, relieve pain, and reset your nervous system.

By responding to the temperature, timing, and pressure differences of the water used, the body experiences changes in the circulation, oxygenation, and elimination. By addressing these basic needs of the body, hydrotherapy is able to achieve benefits like anti-inflammation, metabolic balance and the nervous system.

Underwater massage, contrast baths, hip baths, immersion baths, steam inhalation, wet sheet packs, gastrohepatic packs, spinal baths, foot baths, enemas, and colon hydrotherapy are prescribed by our naturopathic doctors based on your condition and goals.

Not even close. At Pema, hydrotherapy covers targeted temperature therapies, like hip baths, immersion and spinal baths, steam & sauna treatments, and specialised hydrotherapy packs.

GH pack uses a warm pack on your belly and a cold one on your lower back at the same time. That contrast reduces inflammation, detoxifies your liver, kickstarts digestion, boosts circulation, and supports cleansing. Great for liver cleanse and gut healing programmes.

Your hips and lower belly are immersed in water, in a specialised tub, with either cold, warm, or alternating water temperatures. Cold water tones the pelvic floor and calms inflammation; warm water improves circulation, eases cramping, constipation, and releases congestion. These therapies are widely used for gut health, reproductive health, and metabolic regulation.

Both make you sweat, but differently. Steam uses moist heat, which is good for your lungs and skin. A sauna is dry heat that goes deeper into muscles and joints, which is better for aches and pains.

It uses a cold, wet compress on your belly for a set time. It stimulates digestive enzymes, calms gut inflammation, and tones digestion. We prescribe it usually for IBS, bloating, constipation, and sluggish digestion. It is also great for metabolic regulation and visceral fat reduction.

You lie in a shallow tub of cool water that runs the length of your spine. It calms an overactive nervous system, eases stress, lowers blood pressure, and helps you deeply relax. Great for stress, insomnia, and anxiety.

Your body is wrapped in a sequence of a cold wet sheet, followed by dry blankets, which changes the internal body heat regulation. This changes the circulation dynamics. It is used for detoxification, fevers, and nervous system regulation.

The whole body is submerged in water. Warm baths relax muscles and support detox; neutral baths calm the nervous system and are great for anxiety, insomnia, and stress.

A foot bath involves soaking your feet in warm, cold, or alternating water, sometimes accompanied by healing salts. It draws blood towards the feet to boost internal circulation, ease tension headaches, support lymphatic drainage, and regulate the nervous system. It is a frequent prescription for migraines and insomnia.

You are seated in a full-immersion hydrotherapy tub while a pressurised water jet works specific muscles. The warm water plus targeted pressure eases tension, loosens stiff joints, and supports lymphatic drainage. It is good for musculoskeletal pain and post-surgery recovery.

An enema gently flushes water into your lower colon through the rectum to clear out built-up waste and toxins. At Pema, it's done by trained staff in a safe, sterile, supervised setting, using natural preparations chosen for your benefits.

It's a deeper version of an enema where purified water is gently introduced through the entire colon using a safe, sterile, closed system. While an enema only reaches the lower bowel, this clears the full length, flushing out waste, gas, mucus, and buildup, so your gut microbiome gets a clean slate to rebalance.

Diet, Nutrition & Fasting

Yes. The diet at Pema Wellness is strictly vegetarian, containing absolutely no meat, poultry, eggs, or seafood. Our naturopathy experts curate wholesome, plant-focused meals to best support your body's natural healing and detoxification pathways across all Pema Wellness programmes.

Our naturopathic cuisine is largely plant-based by design, it can be easily customized into a fully vegan spread whenever that feels right for you.

No. Eggs or egg-based products are not part of the menu. The entire menu is designed around pure, therapeutic vegetarian nutrition to maximise your health outcomes across all wellness programmes at Pema Wellness.

Pema Wellness offers completely gluten-free meal options tailored entirely to your personal preferences, allergies or clinical diagnoses.

The food at Pema Wellness can be fully customised to be lactose-free based on your individual health needs and medical condition.

Yes. All of your allergies, intolerances, and food sensitivities will be strictly catered to under expert supervision at Pema Wellness.

While Pema Wellness utilises wholesome nuts for their proven therapeutic health benefits, we clearly flag allergen information on any dish that contains them.

Alcohol is strictly not part of the menu at Pema Wellness, to ensure true cellular detox and optimal organ function. All Pema Wellness programmes focus on eliminating toxins completely, allowing your liver and digestive systems to rest and rejuvenate. This conscious abstention is foundational to the healing experience at Pema Wellness.

Tea and coffee are not part of any program at Pema, as caffeine directly interferes with your nervous system, disrupts sleep cycles, and undermines the detoxification process. Eliminating caffeine as part of your stay helps reduce internal inflammation and supports deep sleep restoration.

We provide a wide selection of nourishing tea and coffee alternatives, including therapeutic herbal teas, healing infused water, and nutrient-dense, caffeine-free lattes.

Some guests who regularly consume caffeine may experience mild withdrawal symptoms such as headaches or fatigue in the first 1–2 days of their stay. This is a normal and temporary response, closely monitored by our medical team. Our therapeutic herbal drinks, naturopathic therapies, and acupuncture are specifically designed to ease this transition comfortably and quickly.

The naturopathic cuisine at Pema Wellness combines therapeutic preparation methods with a delicious blend of both Indian and international flavours. The curated farm-to-table experience includes whole foods that focus on nourishment, while allowing the body to detoxify.

Three nourishing naturopathic meals are provided daily at Pema, complemented by therapeutic herbal drinks, fresh juices, and wellness beverages between meals. Every meal is personalised to your health profile, programme phase, and therapeutic goals, ensuring you are consistently nourished and supported throughout your stay.

No. Fasting is never mandatory at Pema. If a fast is considered beneficial for your specific health profile and programme, it will be discussed by your doctor and recommended as part of your personalised plan, never imposed.

A liquid-diet phase may be recommended as part of certain personalised programmes at Pema, depending on your health condition, gut health status, and therapeutic goals. If prescribed, it is never a form of deprivation, and any such recommendation will always be made with your consent and monitored by our team with your full comfort in mind.

No. At Pema, we firmly believe that healing should never feel like deprivation. Your therapeutic nutrition plan will be personalised to your health profile, programme phase, and individual needs, thoughtfully designed to be nourishing, satisfying, and genuinely enjoyable.

Acupuncture and TCM

Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, in which fine, sterile needles are gently inserted into specific points along the body's energy pathways known as meridians to restore balance and stimulate the body's natural healing response. At Pema, acupuncture is practised by well-experienced Doctors as part of a broader integrative programme, supporting everything from pain relief and stress reduction to hormonal balance, digestive health, and deep nervous system restoration.

TCM stands for Traditional Chinese Medicine, a holistic medical system practiced and refined for over 2,500 years. Its primary goal is to restore harmony using therapies like acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping.

Acupuncture is generally not painful. Most guests feel a brief, tiny pinch as the needle is inserted on the superficial layer of skin, followed by a dull, heavy tingle or warm sensation known as De Qi (obtaining the energy).

Acupuncture needles are incredibly small, about as thin as a single strand of human hair. Because they are solid and flexible, they are designed to glide smoothly into the superficial layers of skin.

Bleeding is exceptionally rare because the needles are ultra-fine — it rarely punctures blood vessels or nerves. On rare occasions, a tiny, pinprick drop of blood or a minor, harmless bruise may appear when a needle is removed.

Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, promotes the release of endorphins and anti-inflammatory compounds, improves local circulation, and modulates the stress response by supporting the body's natural ability to heal and rebalance.

Yes, acupuncture at Pema is exceptionally safe as our highly experienced naturopaths use sterile, single-use disposable needles and keep your safety and health as their utmost priority.

No, acupuncture does not always involve cupping, although cupping may be prescribed to you based on your medical condition or health goal.

Although fire cupping is a popular practise associated with cupping and Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is not practiced at Pema.

No. Acupuncture needles are fine, sterile stainless steel needles that do not carry or release any medicine. They work purely by stimulating specific points along the body's energy meridians to activate the body's own natural healing response.

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific meridian points to restore the flow of Qi (energy), balance the body's energy systems, and address the root cause of a condition. Dry needling targets muscular trigger points specifically for pain relief and muscle release.

For acute, less serious concerns, a minimum of 8 sessions is usually enough to see results which can be maintained through lifestyle correction. For more chronic conditions, though, you may need more than 8 sessions, done periodically, to keep the benefits going. Acupuncture builds cumulatively, so consistency really is what makes the results stick.

Both acupressure and acupuncture stimulate the same meridian points, but acupuncture produces a stronger and more sustained therapeutic response. Acupressure is a gentler, non-invasive option.

Acupuncture is safe and well-tolerated. Some guests may experience mild and temporary effects such as slight bruising, minimal bleeding at the needle site, or a brief feeling of lightheadedness or fatigue after a session, all of which resolve quickly and are not a cause for concern.

Yes, it is absolutely safe to receive acupuncture during menstruation. It can also help manage common menstrual symptoms, including cramps, headaches, bloating, and mood swings.

This depends on the chronicity and nature of the condition being treated. In acute conditions, 1–3 sessions can bring noticeable improvement, while chronic conditions often require a longer, structured treatment plan, with a minimum of 8 sessions.

Yes. Acupuncture is non-invasive and does not interact with medications. Guests are always advised to continue their prescribed medications unless otherwise directed by our team of Naturopaths.

Acupuncture is highly effective as both a therapeutic and preventive practice by supporting immune function, hormonal balance, stress regulation, and overall vitality.

Physiotherapy & Fitness

Physiotherapy at Pema Wellness is a clinically guided discipline that uses targeted movement, manual therapy, and specialised techniques to restore function and reduce pain. It is integrated into your personalised wellness programme at Pema Wellness, working alongside naturopathic therapies, hydrotherapy, and nutrition for comprehensive, lasting healing.

Physiotherapy supports chronic pain conditions, arthritis, sports injuries, frozen shoulder, sciatica, nerve pain, plantar fasciitis, post-op recovery, after-stroke rehabilitation and inflammatory bone & joint conditions.

Not at all. They treat disc problems, arthritis, scoliosis, nerve conditions, tendon injuries, headaches, vertigo, women's health concerns like urinary incontinence, balance disorders, after-stroke rehab, and recovery after joint replacements or shoulder surgery.

At Pema, physiotherapy isn't an isolated appointment; it's one piece of a bigger picture. Our physiotherapist works alongside naturopathic doctors, nutritionists, and yoga therapists to get to the root of what's going on, not just treat the symptom.

Our physiotherapy space includes Interferential Therapy (IFT), Ultrasound, Varichrome, Chromo Therapy, Compression Therapy, TENS, Traction Therapy, hot and cold packs, and rehab tools like resistance bands, balance boards, and therapy balls.

Yes, safe movement is often central to recovery. Every session is prescribed and supervised by our physiotherapists, and we always start gently, building up at a pace that's right for you.

The physiotherapy program starts with a full assessment of your body composition, fitness level, musculoskeletal health, and medical history. From there, our physiotherapists, and naturopathic doctors build your plan together, adjusting it to your needs as you progress.

You'll leave with a personalised home exercise plan, movement guidelines, and nutrition tips built around your real life. And our Pema at Home programme stays with you to support your journey even after retreat.

At Pema, Physiotherapy is about lasting recovery, including building strength, correcting posture, improving flexibility, and better movement patterns so the results are long-lasting.

No, it isn't. Some hands-on work, like joint mobilisation, can bring mild, short-lived discomfort but our physiotherapists check in with you throughout and adjust the pressure as needed.

No. In trained hands, it's safe and actually supports recovery. You might feel some muscle fatigue afterward, like post-workout tiredness, but it passes quickly and is not a cause for concern.

No dependence here. The goal is to restore your movement and give you tools to manage things yourself, so you need less treatment over time, not more.

Manual therapy works well on its own, especially for joint mobility. But research shows the best results come from pairing it with electrotherapy, addressing both the physical and neurological sides of pain.

Dry needling targets muscle pain and trigger points to relieve pain. Acupuncture works with your body's energy flow (Qi) along meridian pathways, treating the symptom and the deeper imbalance behind it.

A physiotherapy session runs 45–60 minutes. Many guests notice real change within 5–7 sessions, but our physiotherapist will map out a realistic timeline for you at your first assessment.

The effects depend on the condition. Some guests with acute conditions feel changes after just 2-3 sessions; while others with more complex issues need a few consistent weeks for lasting change with a minimum of 8 sessions.

A fully equipped fitness centre, guided yoga, therapeutic movement classes, aquatic exercise, nature walks, and reflexology trails, all designed to complement your programme, are available at Pema.

Absolutely. We assess where you're at physically first, then build around it. Whether you're an athlete or easing back into movement after years away, our plan meets you exactly where you are.

Physical movement supports your metabolism and body composition, and yes, many guests do lose weight. But the focus is sustainable fat loss and maintaining muscle, not a number on the scale.

Medical Ozone Therapy

Medical ozone therapy is an alternative medical treatment that introduces controlled amounts of medical-grade ozone gas into the body. Ozone (O3) is a highly reactive form of oxygen made of three oxygen atoms instead of the two atoms (O2) we breathe. At Pema, it is generated using specialized equipment that converts pure medical-grade oxygen into ozone.

Nope, totally different. HBOT involves sitting in a pressurized chamber breathing pure oxygen to support wound healing and inflammation. Ozone therapy uses a different gas (O3) that supports metabolic balance, wound healing, anti-inflammation, anti-aging, and longevity.

Yes, it is very safe. It's done under medical supervision with strict protocols, calibrated equipment, proper ventilation, and controlled doses. It's a safe, well-managed procedure.

Ozone therapy encourages your body's own antioxidant mechanisms by getting your body to make antioxidants of its own, which is why it's linked to anti-inflammatory, immune, metabolic, and anti-aging benefits. In a way, it acts like vitamin C or glutathione.

One session of ozone therapy gives you a quick boost, but the real results build up over a full protocol. Effects include better energy, less pain, clearer skin, improved metabolism, and can last up to 3 to 6 months.

Facial Ozone Cupping, hands down. It pairs ozone with vacuum cupping to lift skin, fade acne marks and pigmentation, and boost circulation, leaving you glowing and de-puffed almost instantly.

In India, it isn't classified as a drug, so it doesn't need CDSCO approval like manufactured medicines. It falls under the Ministry of AYUSH framework and is used as a supervised clinical procedure.

At Pema, Ozone therapy is administered through safe methods like rectal or ear insufflation, ozonated oils, airtight limb or scalp bagging, ozone steam, or ozonated drinking water.
